Dolly Sods Wilderness Area

Red Creek Trail:  Lainesville to Red Creek Campground

Overview

This trip was part of a Frederick Community College backpacking class.  Good friend Stefan and I teamed up to take this class as a way of getting our feet wet in a relatively safe way.

The map shown here was of our planned trip.

A larger version of the topographic map is available as well as a full size version of the map.

Large Version (115k)
Full Size Version (900k)

While hiking I also carried a GPS unit (Magellan Platinum) and tracked our trail.  Getting good satellite coverage here was surprisingly difficult at times, even in areas with fairly good views of the sky.  In any event, the map below shows our path as plotted by the GPS (though I made some corrections where the GPS clearly did not have a lock).   I also created waypoints at key areas where we camped, went on side trips, etc.

As with the previous version, you can also view a larger and full size version of this map:

Large Version (158k)
Full Size Version (936k)

These maps were created with National Geographic's Topo! Software.   Highly recommended.

All of the photos shown here have been reduced in size to about 600x400 (or 400x600).   If you would like to have a copy of the original, just send me an email (brian@stinkypigs.com) and give me the name of the file you would like.  To find the name, right click on the picture, select "properties" and note the last part of the URL.  It should look something like "DCP_1234.jpg".

All pictures here were taken with a rather modest Kodak DX3600.

Information about Dolly Sods

Dolly Sods Mapping Project - An effort using GPS to map the trail system throughout Dolly Sods.   Great information as many of the maps, in particular the USGS maps, contain much outdated trails.

Weekend Adventures Article - Contains some really good information on the history, geology, ecology, etc. of the Dolly Sods.

Dolly Sods - This WVU Extension Service article provides some awesome information about Dolly Sods.  Very comprehensive, from history and geology to wildlife and vegetation guide, to feature descriptions and trail maps (rough).

Dolly Sods History - More historical information from the US Forest Service.
